Top Tips on how to Care for Braces

Published on: 9 January, 2020

Learning how to care for your braces can be tough. It’s important you maintain them thoroughly to keep them and your teeth in the best condition possible. Failing to do so can cause some serious problems in the future. You don’t want to end searching ‘dentist near me’ to find the closest dentist for an emergency dentist appointment. We have compiled some top tips right here to help you navigate the process.

Use a Floss Threader

A floss threader is a useful tool to help you properly remove all food traces from your braces. It is a small plastic tool you can hook your floss on to get it into even the hardest to reach areas of your mouth. This tool helps you get behind and underneath the wire to ensure a completely clean mouth.

Brushing

Ensure that you brush all sides of your teeth as well as all around your braces and wiring. This is challenging but vital to ensure that your teeth stay healthy. You don’t want an abundance of plaque to build up and ruin your teeth. This can easily happen with all the nooks and crannies of the braces. Do not forget to also brush the roof of your mouth, tongue, and gums. These are all very important for good oral health.

Food

Avoiding certain foods will help your braces stay in optimal shape. Don’t eat anything you have to bite into such as an apple or corn on the cob. Instead, you could cut up the apple or cut the corn off the cob. This is a much safer way to eat these foods without damaging your braces. Chewing on hard or chewy foods such as lollies, candy or nuts can cause damage to your braces. These are best avoided too.

Stick to these tips for keeping your braces damage-free and shining. Having braces is a breeze with a bit of knowledge put into practice. Ask your orthodontist too for their advice.
